IAAI re-elects Biji Eapen as President, HS Chawla comes in as new Secretary

IAAI blames Aviation regulators’ tacit support for Foreign Carriers to flout Acts and Rules of the country
The Annual convention and Annual General Meeting (AGM) of IATA Agents Association of India (IAAI) concluded in Kochi last week has unanimously re-elected Biji Eapen as the President.  Harjit Singh Chawla,  who was one of the Directors of the Association, has been elected as Secretary by the AGM.

The three-day annual convention and AGM held at Cherai Beach Resort in Kochi was attended by  100 delegates.  A new booking platform developed by IAAI, I-Top, for travel agents was launched at the convention.

Speaking at the Convention, Eapen alleged that the government and the regulators in the country are dictated by certain “vested interests” in the industry and there has been efforts to sideline and discriminate IAAI from various government and regulatory forums at the instance of these vested interests.  He said that IAAI is a national association with over 900 IATA agents, and an equal number of non-IATA agents, which has been fighting the genuine rights of the industry members since its inception.

Biji said that the foreign airlines are blatantly violating the Rules and Acts governing the industry and the government and the regulators are not able to implement the directives of even the Apex Court of the country.  “Rules are very well defined and the Supreme Court Order of January 23, 2013 has interpreted the commission based on the Amended aircraft rules, 2009, which mandates commission as an integral part of the fare which forms the tariff,” he said.

Biji said that IAAI has already filed a Special Leave Petition (SLP) in the Supreme Court to get its own order implemented.  He assured the delegates that the Association expects a positive verdict from the apex court by the end of this year.
