Scottish Development International Launches ‘Scotland Welcomes the World’ Campaign

The Scottish Development International (SDI), the trade and investment arm of the Scottish Government, announced the launch of its campaign ‘Scotland Welcomes the World’, in collaboration with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) in Mumbai. With the Glasgow 2014 Queen’s Baton back in Scotland on June 14, and the Commonwealth Games slated to begin on July 23, the Scottish body is considering a number of events and activities to promote and strengthen cultural and business ties between Scotland and India. SDI launched the campaign with the unveiling of a guide on ‘Doing Business in Scotland’. The guide that has been developed by SDI, Scottish Enterprise with inputs from the Scottish law firm, Anderson Strathern, lays out requisite details and procedures across various sectors to effectively set up or build a business in Scotland. The guide highlights key strengths of Scotland as a business location with an aim to support Indian companies keen to expand their business into Scotland. A number of Indian companies like Wipro, TCS, Piramal and others have been successfully conducting operations in Scotland. The most recent Indian investor to join the league is the global restaurant guide, Zomato. Rooma Kumar Bussi, Country Director India, Scottish Development International, said,“2014 is an exciting year for Scotland with the Commonwealth Games set to begin soon. We are not only seeing an increased interest in everything Scottish, but also for business opportunities that the country has to offer. We are delighted to welcome Zomato to Scotland and hope to see them grow.The food and drink industry is worth over GBP 13 billion annually to the Scottish economy and holds immense potential for business. I am sure Zomato will benefit from Scotland’s industry sectors, its talent pool and business friendly environment.” Viraj Sawant, Business Head Western India, Zomato was also present at the launch ceremony and shared Zomato’s experience of setting up their business in Scotland and its plans to strengthen operations. Zomato, a global restaurant guide currently present in 41 cities across 12 countries, extended its digital presence to Edinburgh and Glasgow in November 2013 and provides information for over 3,000 restaurants in the two cities. Going by the initial consumer response, Zomato also set-up its second UK office after London in Edinburgh in early 2014 to cater to the growing demand for their service more effectively. “With a very diverse cuisine-driven restaurant industry, Scotland has gained significant prominence over the last decade and has a lot to offer to the culinary sector. Edinburgh and Glasgow in Scotland were the obvious choices to expand into. Scotland is one of our focus areas in the region; we are strengthening our presence and growing our team in Scotland. We are investing USD 1 million over the next year to scale up our operations in Scotland", said Sawant.
