Aviation investors in India on a tight rope

Aviation business in India has surged in terms of passenger traffic and airline licenses, however the concern of investors is in terms of time frames of achieving targets, said Amitabh Malhotra, MD, Rothschild Global Advisory, at the ongoing CAPA India Aviation Summit 2018. He said that increasing number of airlines are now focusing on regional connectivity.

Malhotra said that Air India remains the biggest opportunity for any investor to gain meaningful scale in India, without commenting on its divestment.

According to Malhotra, there is a rising opportunity for yield seeking infrastructure funds to invest in Indian airports. While giving a presentation on the subject, he spoke about the developments in the aviation airspace across 4 phases which saw entry of new players and exit of non-performing debt-laden carriers. He cited the measures adopted by Jet Airways for survival, while some smart moves by IndiGo in the past few years.
