GST Council to take a call on rate revision demands

As various aggrieved industries have approached the government demanding review of proposed GST rates, the GST Council might look at these rates once again. Quoting Central Board of Excise & Customs (CBEC) Chairperson, Vanaja Sarna, PTI reported that the decision on revising the tax rates fixed on various goods and services is left to the GST Council.

“We have been getting representations from various industries and businesses to revise rates. So whether any of the items will be opened for revision or not, it is something the Council will take a call on that. It is meeting on June 3,” she said.

Industries including hotels, FMCG, automobiles, etc, have approached the government asking for revision of the rates. Hotel industry has demanded uniform rate of 18% to make Indian tourism industry competitive compared to regional destinations. (Source: PTI)
