RCI signs Rangers Reserve, Uttarakhand as its first Registry Collection property in India

A leader in vacation exchange with nearly 4,500 affiliated resorts in more than 100 countries, including over 135 resorts in India, RCI celebrated its 40th anniversary with a conference themed ‘Imagine Possibilities’, in Goa recently. The conference included discussions by experts on important topics affecting the segment. TravelBiz Monitor presents highlights of the conference
40th_anniversary_celebrations_of_rci_1.jpgAs part of its 40th anniversary celebrations, Registry Collection in India (RCI) organised a big conference at Holiday Inn Resort Goa in Cavelossim, bringing together more than 200 stakeholders from across India and overseas to share, learn, collaborate, and ideate about the future of the timeshare industry. Participants included affiliate members, timeshare marketing professionals, industry body representatives, and those contemplating getting into timeshare. The panel discussions and presentations by experts from the industry covered trends in timeshare in international and Indian markets, growth scenario, industry regulations, and charting out the map for the next phase of growth. The announcement of the first property of the Registry Collection in India, the Rangers Reserve (part of Club Group of Hotels) at Jim Corbett Tiger Reserve in Uttarakhand was also made at the conference. RCI also outlined its strategy for the Indian market and new product innovations at the conference and awarded top partners in various categories at a gala awards night.

We are running six resorts in Uttarakhand and our business has grown over the years with our affiliation with RCI,” stated Atul Sharma, CMD, Club Group of Hotels. Registry Collection is a small division of RCI, which was set up 12 years ago for luxury leisure and real estate timeshare. According to Gregg Anderson, Global VP, Registry Collection, it is an exclusive programme with 240 properties in 40 countries and has 33,000 members. It provides members with access to an elite global network of the finest vacation properties at some of the world’s premier destinations. Members also benefit from exclusive travel and leisure services, such as personal concierge services that are available 24/7. “The luxury segment in India is growing rapidly and we look forward to increasing presence in the country and are planning to add four more properties in the next two years,” stated Anderson.

40th_anniversary_celebrations_of_rci_3.jpgThe high level of excitement and optimism about the Indian market was also shared by Sean Lowe, MD, Europe, Middle East, Africa and India, RCI, who said, “We are looking at India as the growth engine for RCI. Currently, we have more than one lakh families as members in India. The factors that will fuel growth in India for the segment are advent of budget airlines, new networks, modern credit card system, rapid urbanisation, and trend of taking two to three holidays in a year. What makes India so successful is that there is a strong domestic market for domestic products.” Pali Badwal, MD, RCI India, in his presentation said that India is an evolving market and the focus should be on trying different things. “While Indians will increasingly take holidays, the challenge is to convince them to take timeshare. India is a huge potential market and it is important that all stakeholders work together and have a clear strategy to tap the market. We are looking at affiliations, but are also looking at quality. It is important that the member gets a high-quality experience at all the properties. The focus should also be on understanding the customer and transparency. It is also important to customise and localise the product for the Indian market and are working with our partners to split one-week product into two to offer more flexibility as India has so many places to see and this also helps in traction in terms of occupancy for our members,” stated Badwal.

40th_anniversary_celebrations_of_rci_4.jpgA debate on important issues was witnessed during the panel discussion on topics ranging from Time Share Regulation; Investment and Funding and Marketing of Timeshare. Arun Nanda, Chairman, Mahindra Holidays & Resorts India Ltd., shared his experience in setting up Club Mahindra and his insight into the segment. Regulation was an important and hotly discussed topic. Most speakers agreed on having self regulation instead of it being imposed by an external body. The objectives of having a regulatory body are to ensure branding with minimum standards, independent grievance redressal mechanism, and guidelines for development of the industry. Calling the segment a policy orphan, the speakers felt that the segment should come under the purview of the Ministry of Tourism.
