Pitching for regular running of steam locomotives between tourism destinations, Indian Railways yesterday said that it will help preserve the steam heritage of the country as well as boost tourism in the country. "The operation of steam locos between Delhi-Alwar and in hill stations can be a great tourist attraction and we should work for it," said Aswani Lohani, Divisional Rail Manager while addressing the National Steam Congress in New Delhi, according to a PTI report.
Lohani said the railways have recently revived the steam locoshed at Rewari where nine steam locos are being showcased for the public. Sanjiv Handa, Railway Board Member said, "Steam loco is the heart of heritage and it is should be revived. The movement for revival of steam locos is catching on and the revival process should be institutionalised."
RC Sethi, President of Indian Steam Railway Society however, said there is a shortage of good coal, spare parts and supporting staff to keep steam locos alive. "In order to promote steam heritage, every major station should have steam locos," Sethi said.
