Invest India constitutes Working Group for niche tourism

Invest India, the agency under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry for facilitating of foreign and other investments into India, has constituted a Working Group to formulate conducive policy interventions for the promotion of niche tourism. The  Sub-committee under the Working Group was constituted at a brainstorming meeting held in Delhi attended by officials of Invest India, Ministry of Tourism, and representatives of private industry engaged in niche tourism.

The niche tourism identified include adventure tourism, cruise tourism, medical and wellness, golf tourism, etc. Sharing the objectives of the Working Group, Raja Singh Khurana, an official from Invest India said that the group will identify and recommend “key policy interventions” required to help the sector reach its potential. He said that the immediate goal is to come out with key policy interventions which are easy to execute in the short term and evaluate the impact. “We want to first identify the low hanging fruits in terms of interventions and use it to improve the niche tourism potential in India,” he added.

He said that another major goal of forming the Working Group is to assess the current business requirement both in terms of investments and number of people employed in the niche tourism segment and expected investments and employment generation capabilities five-year down the line. Then it will become handy for the government and the policy makers to evolve skilling strategies for the segment with a long term perspective, he said.

The Working Group will also study the best niche tourism policies and safety standards and best practices in Indian States and create a model policy and practices to formulate a national policy based on best practices for the entire country.  The Working Group will also identify niche tourism activities like Adventure best suited for a State or a destination and help formulate infrastructure and safety guidelines accordingly.

The sub-committee for niche tourism have Ajeet Bajaj as co-Chair, and Sanjay Basu (Cruise), Tejbir Singh Anand (Adventure), and Mridula Tangirala (Wildlife) as members.

At the aegis of Invest India, Working Groups have been constituted for different sub-segments of the Travel and Tourism industry like Accommodation, MICE, etc.
