Railway Minister asks IRCTC to upgrade online ticketing system

Amid reports of passengers finding it difficult to book tickets online, C P Joshi, Minister for Railways, Government of India, has asked the Indian Railway Catering an Tourism Corporation Ltd (IRCTC) to enhance the capacity of its web servers and upgrade ticketing services. Joshi, who took over additional charge of railways for the second time in UPA-II , expressed disappointment on the Ministry of Railways, Government of India failure to tackle the issue. They added that he told his officials that the Ministry did not seem interested in solving the issue, PTI reported.

Recently, IRCTC officials had told the Minister that the agency's web servers could book around 2,000 tickets per minute. The Indian Railways subsidiary plans to increase this to 7,200 e-tickets per minute in the current financial year, Joshi's predecessor Pawan Kumar Bansal had announced in his Rail Budget Speech.

Ministry officials told Joshi that they needed to spend around Rs ten crore to procure hardware to upgrade their ticketing capacity, and that would require at least three more months.
