Shatabdi Express logs on to “Business on Wheels”

Wifi solution planned to be implemented on Rajdhani Express next

With the Indian Railways’ plans to provide broadband connectivity to all major long distance trains, Techno Sat Comm, a Mumbai based solution provider, has recently demonstrated its customised broadband solution service based on Wifi technology aboard the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Shatabdi Express. This is the company’s first demonstration on Indian trains.

Techno Sat Comm has been approved to demonstrate its solution “Business on Wheels” in one of the major trains, Shatabdi Express after receiving basic clearances from the Indian Railways. Speaking exclusively to TravelBiz Monitor on the same, Niravkumar Dave, Managing Director, Techno Sat Comm, states, “We have been conducting research for the past four years to provide these services in Indian trains. Individuals and entrepreneurs spend a lot of time travelling, which may go in vain, as they may not be able to stay connected and complete work. Thus, we developed the solution to provide these services here.” The Wifi solution provided by the company has been in operation on trains in England and other parts of Europe. The company has taken strategic technical support from the European operator 21Net, which has implemented these services in the European trains like the high speed train operators Thalys, SNCF and RENFE.

The satellite operated technology solution provider is also exploring a variety of services that can be provided via broadband on the trains. “There can be several applications to the broadband service, which will not be limited just to internet connectivity. It can be explored to implementation of surveillance cameras, providing stock market updates, streaming of movies with provision for movies on demand, providing a media library on the train, music downloads, live television and telephone services. The development of these activities may take time,” Dave adds. The company has conducted passenger surveys to assess the various needs that can be serviced through the broadband service.

The provision of these services on Shatabdi Express will help business travellers on this route. Techno Sat Comm aims to operate on the Rajdhani Express routes next. With the affirmation of Indian Railways on the same, the company aims to operate with 200 trains in the next five years. It will incur an investment of Rs 700 crore on the same, and will consider various funding media to aid its investments.
