India issues Travel Advisory for Maldives

Considering the political uncertainties and crisis erupted in Maldives after the Supreme Court’s order for releasing the incarcerated opposition leaders, India has issued travel advisory to its citizens from travelling to Male islands till further notice. The Ministry of External Affairs of India in a statement has said that “the law and order situation is a matter of concern” in the neighbouring country.

“The prevailing political developments in Maldives and the resultant law and order situation is a matter of concern for the Government of India. Indian nationals are, therefore, advised to defer all non-essential travels to Male and other atolls until further notice. Indian expatriates in Maldives are also alerted to the need for heightened security awareness, and urged to exercise due caution in public and avoid public gatherings,” the statement reads.

As per BBC news, the Maldivian government has declared a state of emergency in the country for next 15 days, giving extraordinary powers to the security agencies. The President has already suspended the Parliament and ordered the defence forces to resist any move by the Supreme Court to impeach him for not obeying its orders.
