Philippines Tourism to focus on trade engagement to equip them to sell the destination better

Expects 20% growth in Indian arrivals in 2018
According to Daks Fernandez Gonzales, Head – Product and Market Development for India and Middle East, Philippines Tourism, the interest towards Philippines as a travelling destination is “quite strong” in the Indian market. Therefore to cash in on that interest the tourism board will be investing on “more trade education” to equip them “sell the destination better.” Gonzales was speaking to the media here in Delhi during his recent visit to the city to participate in SATTE 2018. “Our products perfectly match the current market demand, and it is only going to improve,” he said.

The Philippines crossed 1-lakh tourist mark from India in 2017 and the Tourism Board is hopeful of achieving a 20% growth in 2018. India is the 12th largest source market for the Philippines and as far as growth percentage is concerned, it is the second strongest growth market, Gonzales said.

In terms of travel segments, from India, MICE, Leisure and family travel are the strongest to Philippines.  Gonzales said that those who travelled for MICE purposes for the first time have shown the appetite to visit the country again with the family. While the pristine beaches are a big draw with tourists of all categories, there is an increasing demand for soft adventures on the islands with Indian travellers. “We are an archipelago and therefore would never run out of newer products.  We have the capacity to reinvent ourselves to keep the interest going with travellers,” he said.

Commenting on the issue of direct connectivity which continues to be a disadvantage while promoting the destination, Gonzales said that while the commitment is strong on all sides it is a matter of time the service providers believed there is a business opportunity.

Philippines Tourism participated in the just concluded SATTE 2018 with 8 industry partners.
