Tangalooma appoints former Aussie cricketer, Andy Bichel as brand ambassador for India

Plans to focus more on tapping MICE segment in India
Tangalooma Island Resort near Brisbane in Queensland, Australia, which is a popular destination in India, has appointed Andy Bichel, former Aussie test cricketer and current bowling coach of Chennai Super Kings as its brand ambassador for the country. This announcement was made by Chad Croft, International Sales Manager, Tangalooma Island Resort, at a networking dinner organised for the travel trade in Mumbai recently. Bichel, who is a resident of Brisbane, said that the island resort is like his backyard where in less than an hour he is transported into a different and beautiful world. “I have spent many holidays there and it’s my best fishing and barbeque spot. I am happy to be appointed as brand ambassador for India and wish many more Indians visit my favourite backyard.”

Croft informed that resort is on the verge of completing major refurbishment with new inclusions like the waterfront all-weather pavilion, Chinese restaurant, coffee shop, etc. They plan to tap the MICE market in India more aggressively, especially the Incentives segment. “We have created a MICE-specific brochure for the Indian market, as we have recently seen interest from Incentive groups ranging from 40-100 people for the destination and would like to tap the segment further as it holds good potential,” said Croft.

“We have had a presence in the Indian market for nearly a decade and understand the needs of Indian travellers and have Indian chefs who can also offer Jain cuisine. FIT and family segments are quite big and along with group travel, will continue to be the main business from India. Our focus is also on tapping Tier-II cities and there has been a strong FIT movement from Ahmedabad. We conducted roadshows in January this year covering Kolkata, Chandigarh and Mumbai,” stated Croft. He informed that Tangalooma with its pristine beaches and myriad activities like dolphin feeding, dune surfing, ATV rides, receives around 1,500 to 2,000 Indian visitors a year.

According to Ryna Sequeira, Marketing Manager India, Tourism and Events Queensland, Tangalooma Island Resort is one of the top island getaways in Queensland. “Queensland has had an exceptional year with a 24 per cent increase in Indian visitor arrivals as of year ending June 2014, and the state has recorded the highest percentage of growth for Australia. We look forward to a steady increase in visitor numbers with the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2015," said Sequeira.
