Delhi Tourism celebrates World Heritage Day

Delhi Tourism in association with INTACH, INDIA CITY WALKS & DELHI I LOVE YOU commemorated the World Heritage Day at Jama Masjid, on April 17, 2016 in the august presence of Kapil Mishra, Hon'ble Minister of Tourism of Delhi, who flagged off a heritage rickshaw tour at the venue. A. Anbarasu, Divisional Commissioner and Secy. (Revenue), Govt. of NCT of Delhi, Padmini Singhla, MD & CEO, Delhi Tourism and Dietrich Schullenberg, Cultural Consulate, German Embassy and Syed Tariq Bukhari, Gen. Secy., Jama Masjid were present along with other senior officers from DTTDC and Delhi Govt.

This occasion presented an opportunity to showcase the world a truer perspective of Delhi's remarkable heritage and to sensitise residents and visitors about the monuments that are an integral part of the capital city. Early morning delightful Heritage Walks and Rickshaw Tours atlanes & by-lanes of Shahjahanabad. Also, a Heritage Walk & Cycle Tour in Mehrauli Archaeological Park was organized on April 17, 2016 which was flagged off by Naresh Yadav, Hon’ble MLA, Mehrauli.

Various monuments present in the vicinity like Adam Khan’s tomb, GhandhakkiBaoli, Jahaz Mahal, Jharna, Huaz-i- shamshi, Balban’s tomb, Mosque and tomb of JamaliKamali, Metcalf’s folly, Rajon ki Baoli, Tomb unkown, Quli Khan’s tomb and Boat House were covered during the event. A Special Heritage Walkfor students will be  organized on April 18, 2016 at Mehrauli Archaeological Park.

A Photo Exhibition of the lesser known yet beautiful monuments of Delhi by ‘Delhi I Love You’ and ‘Youth for Heritage Foundation’ will be  organised at DilliHaat, INA the same day where photographs of lesser known monuments of Delhi will be kept at display and Dastangoi, a story telling programme by Fouzia&Fazal will be organised at DilliHaat INA who will  present ‘Dastam Ghummi Kebabi’, a situational comedy which revolves around conversation of ‘Ghummi’ from Old Delhi famous for his mouth watering kebabs and his flavorful urdu with a group of highly educated and polite individuals from Aligarh.

Kapil Mishra, Minister of Tourism, Govt. of Delhi said, "The initiative is to spread awareness about the rich heritage of the capital. Besides, heritage walks promote a healthy habit of walking to stay fit. We will continue similar events and we're soon going to start these walks in entire Delhi. Further, heritage walks have also been popularized among school children and we're planning to offer them different facilities along with subsidies.” Delhi also houses 3 World Heritage Site i.e. Humayun’s Tomb, Qutub Minar & Red Fort and is a rightful contender for world heritage city tag.

Padmini Singhla, MD & CEO, DTTDC said, “These Heritage Walks and Tours offer experiences that are scintillating, multicultural and quirky world of Delhi which is renowned for its spectacular tangible and intangible cultural heritage." Delhi’s rich past is manifested in the varied expressions of tangible and intangible heritage. Evidence of the tangible heritage is present in the numerous historical buildings that dot Delhi’s urban areas.

Dietrich Schullenberg, Cultural Consulate, German Embassy also shared his experience and said, ”I’m very excited to attend this heritage walk and rickshaw tour. It not only provides an access to explore the lanes and bylanes of Old Delhi but also helps us to learn more about the historical significance of Delhi. Delhi has lots to offer and explore." Besides promoting known monuments amongst residents and visitors these walks and tours will also help to popularize the lesser known yet beautiful monuments of Delhi and will thus boost tourism by encouraging visitors to experience the city as a destination.
