Eco & Eductaional tourism are the sectors we are focusing on: Malaysia


Tourism Malaysia Mumbai has conducted a roadshow in Mumbai on January 9, 2019 at St Regis Hotel.

A total of 30 participants from 22 organisations from Malaysia participated under the Tourism Malaysia pavilion. They comprised of hoteliers, tour operators, airlines and product owners.  Award-winning theme parks namely Legoland Malaysia and Sunway Lagoon Theme Park also participated to offer attractive packages to pull in the crowd.

While exclusively talking with TravelBiz Monitor, Mohd Hafiz Hashim, Director, Tourism Malaysia Mumbai, said, “There are many new attractive destinations which are still unknown to many. Destination like Desaru coast theme park has gained attention, but Indians as well as tourists from other countries still believe that Malaysia is a destination for family and entertainment. But practically we have much more to offer. We are now focusing on other segments like eco tourism, green tourism, educational tourism.”

Hashim said, “India is the sixth top tourist generating market for Malaysia with a total of 552,739 Indian visitors recorded in 2017. From India until November 2018 a growth of 9.5% was registered as compared to that of 2017 which is very encouraging. We hope to achieve 1 million arrivals from India market in 2020.”

On the same lines, Mohamad Taib B. Ibrahim, Senior Deputy Director International Marketing Division, South Asia, said, “As far as collaboration is concerned, we encourage airlines from India as well as domestic carriers for joint technical campaign. Now, we have Indian airline IndiGo that flew back from November 15, last year so that’s a milestone for us. Because, we use to receive very few carriers but now we have IndiGo and we hope this continues.”

Hashim added, ”For India, we will be doing more roadshows and seminars targeting metros and Tier II cities. Other then Mumbai, we are also targeting cities like Bhubaneswar, Indore, Hyderabad, Delhi and also the southern region. Eco & Educational tourism are our focus areas: Malaysia

We have plans to reach out to the tour operators and travel agents directly.”

Commenting on the air connectivity Ibrahim said, “Right now we have IndiGo as mentioned earlier. Other then that airlines like Malaysia Airlines, Singapore airlines give access to the tourists. We hope to connect with other Indian airlines soon.”
