HRAO to seek INR 3,000 crore package from Centre for Odisha

The Hotel & Restaurant Association of Odisha (HRAO) will submit a memorandum to the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi seeking INR 3,000 crore package for the state for the reconstruction of tourism infrastructure that was damaged in the Cyclone Fani. According to JK Mohanty, President, HRAO and Chairman & Managing Director of Swosti Group of Hotels, the memorandum will be submitted on June 1 to the Prime Minister.

Apart from the loss to the hotel properties worth INR 500 crore in Puri, Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, the Association estimates a revenue and business loss of about INR 3,000 crore for the hotel industry in the state in the aftermath of the cyclone.

“There has been massive damage to the green cover in these places, and it will take years to replace it. The hotel association has asked all member hotels to plant 5,000 saplings each to regenerate the greenery lost in the cyclone,” he added.

Talking about the package proposal, he said that the Eastern region has always been neglected by successive governments when it comes to tourism funding. “Odisha has not received its due on the tourism front from the Centre since independence. The focus of the Central government has always been on Agra, Rajasthan, Goa and Kerala. We want the Centre to give priority to Odisha and the Eastern states this time,” he said.

However, Mohanty expressed the hope that the “good equation” between Prime Minister Modi and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on matters of development will usher a new era of growth and development in the state overall and in the tourism sector in particular.
