Maldives Tourism plans to implement aggressive promotional and marketing activities in India to increase tourist footfalls to the island nation. The country welcomed over 45,000 Indian tourists last year, recording a double-digit growth since 2010, informed Hussain Lirar, Deputy Minister of Tourism, Republic of Maldives. He was speakin at the recent four-city (Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, and Kolkata) roadshow organised by Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation.

Air India Ltd. collaborated with MMPRC as the Airline Partner for the roadshow. Trans Maldivian Airways Pvt. Ltd., Bandos Island Resort and Spa, Atoll Discovery Pvt. Ltd., Reollo Travel, Let's Go Maldives, Sun Siyam Resorts, Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa, Adaaran Resorts, Canopus Akuasun Maldives Pvt. Ltd., and Bathala Island Resort were the representative partners of Maldives who participated in the roadshow.

Lirar said, “India is an important source market for Maldives. However, we are not receiving enough tourists from this market, though there is huge potential for growth. Last year, Maldives received 45,587 Indian tourists, which is a 19.9 per cent growth over the previous year. The objective of the roadshow was to interact with the Indian travel trade, and study the Indian market and understand its requirements.” He added that India is the seventh top source market for Maldives. The top six are China, Russia, UK, Germany, Italy, and France.

“The marketing budget for the Indian market has increased over the years. Maldives is a destination for all segments of travellers. We are looking at advertising in multiplexes and other mediums,” Lirar said.

Reena Abdul Wahid, Marketing Officer, Maldives Tourism, made a presentation at the roadshow, explaining the 'One Island One Resort' concept of the destination. Talking about the tourism offerings, visa procedures, connectivity, and accommodation facilities in Maldives, she said that the integrated resort development project, Thumburi is underway and will be open by 2017.
