PCEB scales up efforts to promote Penang as a MICE destination in India

Penang Convention & Exhibition Bureau (PCEB) is aggressively promoting Penang (located in Malaysia) as a MICE destination in India.

In this direction, both PCEB and Apollo Conferences are taking steps to promote it in the Indian Travel Trade. “PCEB is a body which promotes business events in Penang and we are co-exhibiting with them,” said Presanth Chandra, Group CEO, Apollo Asia Travel Group.

According to him, Penang is just five hours drive from Kuala Lumpur and its capital George Town has been accorded a listing as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. “Apart from this, Penang is well connected with other countries and have direct flights from Thailand, Indonesia and Singapore,” said Chandra.

In their endeavour to promote the region in India, they have started conducting roadshows from last year.  “In January next year, we are going to organise Penang roadshow in five cities in India. The dates of the roadshow will be announced soon,” said Chandra. The cities where the road shows will be held are Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Ahmedabad.

To provide further momentum in their promotional exercises (for India market), PCEB is also organising familiarisation trips for media and MICE operators, said Chandra. “Last year, more than 2000 events took place in Penang and out of that India contributed 20%. This speaks volume of potential India offers to Penang,” said Chandra.

He also said that Penang has everything to become an ideal MICE destination for Indian companies. “Besides five star hotels, we have many four and three star hotels and the total room inventory is around 30,000 approximately,” he said. Citing an example of growing popularity of Penang in India, he said that Global Panorama Showcase’s (GPS) EDWIN SEA programme will be hosted in Penang. “PCEB along with Apollo Conferences are organizing the event,” he said.

Commenting on convention centres, Chandra said that Penang has many such centres with different capacities. “Setia Spice is our largest convention centre which can accommodate 20,000 people. Besides, this is the first ever solar power convention centre in Asia,” said Chandra.

As of now, both PCEB and Apollo Conferences are targeting few major cities of India. “We have started with big cities and will slowly turn our focus to smaller cities of India as well. We are working with B2B trade only and not directly with companies,” said Chandra.
