Maharashtra sends highest no of tourists to Kerala after Tamil Nadu and Karnataka

According to a report in The Times of India, one of the most popular domestic destinations Kerala, gets the largest number of domestic tourists from its neighbouring states Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, but in third place is Maharashtra, that is, largely upper middle-class tourists from Mumbai. “Tourists from Mumbai head for the hill stations and the backwaters, unlike those from Delhi who head for the beach destinations in Kerala,” said P Muraleedharan, Tourist Information officer, Department of Tourism, Government of Kerala. The number is not huge though. Of the 1.31crore domestic tourists who visited Kerala in 2016, 4.89 lakh were from Maharashtra. “Demonetisation and local issues, like liquor prohibition, have hit the tourist arrival numbers,” he said, adding that since alcohol is currently served only in 5-star hotels, corporate group bookings to 4-star and 3-star properties from mid-sized companies have gone down.

On the international front, Kerala registered 10 lakh international tourist arrivals in 2016, an increase of 6.25 % over 2015. “Our target is to achieve a 100% growth in foreign tourists and a 50% growth in domestic tourists in the next five years,” he added. Kerala Tourism officials were in Mumbai yesterday  to promote the destination and new tourist attractions. Among them were the Kochi Muziris Biennale, which attracts artists and art enthusiasts from across the world. Other attractions are the Muziris heritage project, the port that was frequented by Arabs, Romans, Egyptians as early as first century BC and which has been preserved across 25 museums as the largest heritage conservation project in India; and the Spice route project, the UNESCO-backed endeavour that rekindles the 2,000-year old sea links and shared cultural legacies with 30 countries.
