redBus.in launches software for integration of online bus inventory in India

Bangalore-based online bus ticketing company, redBus.in, recently launched Bus Operators Software System (BOSS) for managing and aggregating the bus inventory of independent bus operators in India. The main idea behind launching BOSS is to organise the bus travel industry and tap the increasing demand. The company is looking at distributing the software to about 50 bus operators in India by March 2010. The company currently books around 3,000 bus tickets per day across India. It has an inventory of over 500 bus operators covering over 5000 routes across 15 states in India.

Phanindra Sama, Co-Founder and CEO, redBus.in said, “Online bus ticketing in India is growing at the rate of 33 per cent year-on-year and has a huge untapped potential. But the market is still at a very nascent stage and a large part is still operating through offline operations. Through BOSS, we are providing technological support to bus operators under the Software As A Service (SAAS) model for managing and aggregating their inventory. We are looking at installing the software with 50 bus operators. We will observe the performance of the software till the end of this financial year and will then look at the entire bus operators market in India.”

Earlier this year, the company also entered the chartered bus services segment through 'Rent-A-Bus' service option. Sama said, “Major international tour operators face problems while booking their clients on bus tours in India. Since the bus tour industry here is not organised, most of the inbound travellers are charged double the actual amount. With an aim to make the chartered bus services more reliable, economical and on par with international standards, we entered the coach segment. We are already recording a good response from countries like US, Europe and Middle East.” The company offers charter bus and bus rental services.

The company raised a second round of funding led by Inventus Capital Partners in July this year. According to Sama, the funds will be used for focusing on increasing the geographical presence (from current seven locations – Ahmedabad, Chennai, New Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Pune to cities of North East region, Rajasthan and Orissa); BOSS and launching new products including chartered buses.

When asked about any plans to diversify the business by entering the hotels or airlines segment, Sama said, “The bus market is currently pegged at a staggering Rs 12,000 crore and there are very few organised players in this market. We have no plans to enter the hospitality or aviation market in the near future, but we might get into holiday packages or other travel service options post 2011. Currently, our core focus is on the bus industry.”
