The development of aerotropolises at Indian airports is believed to be a fast emerging trend and the next big thing in airport infrastructure. An aerotropolis is the development of a city in and around the airport premise with infrastructure developments like hotels, business parks, SEZs, MRO and entertainment centres to attract tourists, as well as the general masses. Talking about the aerotropolis concept in the Indian market, ACK Nair, Airport Director, Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) stated, “ We are developing a hospitality district, business park, MRO facility, convention centre and an aerospace museum for passengers.” CIAL is of the opinion that by adopting an aerotropolis concept, the airport can attract more travellers and enhance their airport experience with various activities to pursue.
Citing similar opinion, officials of Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) stated, “By adopting the aerotropolis concept the developer has to look at an overall development of the airport with facilities like business parks, hotels, MRO facilities and also keep in mind connectivity of the main city and airport.” |
