In a bid to promote Eco, Ethnic and Cultural Tourism as the main tourism products in the state, Assam Tourism has drafted out plans to develop the lesser-known destinations within the state namely Pobitora, Rajiv Gandhi National Park at Orang, hill station located at Halflong, Tejpur Sibsagar, Majuli Island and Barak Valley. It will also develop two tourism circuits- Middle Assam Circuit and Buddhist Circuit. Assam Tourism Department had already received a fund of Rs eight crore from the Centre to develop both circuits. The destination development will be funded from the state budget, which has been increased four times this year for tourism.
The state has not reported sizeable drop in international tourist traffic even after being hit by the recent disturbance. However, there has been a slow-down in phase-wise development of not so popular destinations, as well as in the further development of prominent locations.
