Having already positioned Langkawi as a leisure destination to Indian travellers, Langkawi Development Authority (LDA) now plans to focus on promoting the region as a MICE destination in the Indian market. LDA which received approximately 30,000 Indian tourists in 2008, will position the various facets of the island like the traditional culture of legends and myths, cuisine, eco and water sports activity like baby shark feeding, scuba diving and snorkelling etc. for its MICE offerings. Elaborating LDA’s plans for this year, Megat Shahrul Azman B Abas, Tourism Manager, LDA said, “Langkawi as a MICE destination has a lot to offer Indian tourists. It has good capacity to cater a group of 500-600 travellers at a time.”
LDA is also looking at promoting the destination through Bollywood and other film industries like Tollywood and is open for movie shoots in the destination. Apart from MICE and Bollywood, LDA will continue to promote the destination through the leisure i.e. is the family market and also the wedding and honeymooners market. Considering the global economic scenario, LDA mentions that the targets for this year will have to be realistic. |
