Malaysia to restart ‘Visa Free Transit’ facility for Indian travellers from July 1, 2010

Plans to offer five days Free Transit Visa to attract tourists

The Malaysian government has announced that it will restart Visa Free Transit facility for passengers travelling from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka via Malaysia from July 1, 2010. The government had earlier launched this facility but due to certain security reasons withdrew it. According to the government, passengers availing the facility will not only help in increasing airline business but also inbound tourist arrivals. However, the government is currently working on the details of the facility in terms of the number of days for the validity of Transit Visa, conditions, etc.

Speaking with TravelBiz Monitor on the Indian market perspective, P Manoharan, Director – India, Tourism Malaysia said, “About 20 – 25 per cent of Indians use Malaysia as a transit destination for countries like Australia, New Zealand and the US. We are intending to tap this market by offering Free Transit Visa who can experience Malaysia while transiting from the country.”
