MoT revises hotel approval and classification/reclassification norms

Relaxes F&B norms

Ministry of Tourism (MoT) and Government of India (GoI) has come out with revised norms for approval of hotel projects, as well as classification and renewal norms for the hospitality units in India. Although, there are no major changes in the norms, which have been uploaded day before yesterday in Incredible India website of MoT, the revised norms focuses more on security, accessibility and F&B, aspects.

According to an official of MoT, the revised norms have specified some minimum facilities across all categories for different people. He informed that the Ministry has set September 2010 as the deadline for all hotels to put in place certain minimum facilities, in terms of improving the accessibility.

According to sources in the industry, the Ministry wants to overhaul the existing classification norms in a comprehensive way. However, consensus could not be derived on certain issues, especially the lobby size and linen standards. “We had our objections against mandatory lobby size, because of its impracticality,” said an official from MoT.
