In early 2008, signs of an economic downturn emerged mainly due to aviation fuel hikes and higher air ticket costs and started impacting the entire world tourism industry. The tourism sector started further suffering from reduced consumer demand. Business and leisure tourism business felt the credit crunch due to the economic meltdown in USA, UK, Germany, France etc. Recent tourism forecast of UNWTO showed about 20-25 per cent of decrease in tourist arrivals worldwide. In India also the effect of the downturn was visible until the situation completely changed post Mumbai terror attacks.

Online Travel Market in India
At the recently held Travel Distribution India Summit 2008, Lemon Tree Hotel Company presented a brief on the online market in India. According to estimates, the online travel space will acquire about 23 per cent of the total travel in the country, which was at 11 per cent in 2007 and 15 per cent in 2008. It is known that major travel suppliers are moving their focus on online sales as the end consumers are increasingly booking online.
