Over a rather disturbed phone line between our Himalayan home and Delhi, we gleaned a lot of interesting information. Responding to former Tourism Minister, Ambika Soni’s concerns about the availability of accommodation for the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, Maharaj contacted people like retired Defence Service officers and Ambassadors. He suggested to them that since they had large houses and their children had moved into their own homes, they might consider offering their rooms and houses for home stays. Not just for Bed & Breakfast as had once been suggested. Many welcomed the idea both because of the interesting new social bonds it might establish, but also the fact that it would assure an additional income for the housewife: Women’s Empowerment as the catchphrase put it.
