The 1% Obsession!
India Tourism has long been obsessed with the one per cent syndrome. In spite of the change of guard at the helm - half-a-dozen ministers in the last ten years - the obsession with this figure has remained almost intact. As the target (12 million, one per cent of total global international arrivals of 1.1 billion) remained elusive, we shifted the deadline to achieve this repeatedly. We missed the target, first in 2010 when Commonwealth Games brought more shame rather than visitors to the country. We then readjusted our deadline again to 2015. The result is destined to go off target once again considering the existing unassailable gap to achieve the target. However, these failures never bothered our ministers who continue to set new deadlines and targets at will.
