The Sikkim tourism department is all set to initiate ‘Heli Tourism’ in the state. According to S B S Bhadauria, Secretary Tourism, Department of Tourism, Government of Sikkim, the Centre has asked the state tourism department to prepare a feasibility report for the development of heli-pads and airstrips across the state. “The models which are being prepared will match the cultural and traditional aspects of the concerned area. We aim to begin with an intra-state service and extend to adjacent areas thereafter,” said Bhadauria.
Currently, a helicopter service is operational between Bagdogra in Siliguri and Gangtok and the tourism department also arrange for scheduled mountain air travel. As per a report in Statesman News Service, last week, the South Sikkim Tourism Development Society (SSTDS) decided to organise helicopter service from Namchi to Bagdogra every Thursday under the supervision of Sikkim Tourism Development Corporation (STDC). In addition to the Helicopter Tourism, the tourism department is also focusing on promotion of Village-Tourism in Sikkim. |
